Coming off a four-win season, an opening night victory won’t be overlooked.
The Chesterton baseball team had little trouble in picking up a
season-opening 12-1 victory over Hammond Gavit at CHS on Monday night.
“We got everybody into the game and everyone had a chance to contribute,”
Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said.
Trojan starter Jordan Peterson dominated the game from the opening pitch as
he worked four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out
seven.
“Jordan threw the ball well,” Campbell said. “We certainly hope that’s the
performance we can get from him every night. He got ahead and threw his
breaking ball for a strike and it’s really a good one.”
Offensively, Chesterton jumped on Gavit starter Fred Ebner right away. A
leadoff single by Justin Jenks was followed by a two-run home run from KJ
Zelenika. Another run scored after Zac Hise doubled and scored for a 3-0
lead.
“We put the ball in play and hit it hard,” Campbell said of his offense that
pounded out 13 hits.
The Trojans blew the game open in the third inning as Austin Cooley, Zach
Rochowiak (double), Alex Olson and Jake Post (double) all collected hits to
start the frame. Three walks and a single by Peterson pushed the lead to
8-0.
“You should do that against the kind of pitching we saw tonight and we’ve
seen nights where you can’t do anything against it,” Campbell said.
An RBI single for Bobby Mitchel scored Zack Jenks in the fourth and Post
ended the game with a three-run home run to left field after Brandon Jenks
and Zack Jenks reached on errors.
Cooley, Ales Olson and Post all recorded two hits to lead the offense. Mike
Albano worked the final two innings on the mound, allowing two hits and
striking out one.
Chesterton returns to the field on Wednesday when they host East Chicago
Central beginning at 5:30 p.m.
