Chesterton Baseball beats LaPorte 7-4

The Chesterton baseball team built an early 5-0 lead and held on for a 7-4 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at LaPorte on Tuesday.

The Trojans jumped on top in the third inning as Matt Kubacki singled with one out and courtesy runner Patrick Tilden moved to second on a wild pitch.

Following a walk to Andrew Ralph, Corey Rusboldt doubled to score Tilden and Ralph for a 2-0 lead.

Another rally in the fourth started with a walk to Cole Teal. Cameron O’Brien reached on an error that moved runners to second and third.

Jeremy Jaeger singled to right field scoring Teal, while O’Brien and Jaeger scored on Kubacki’s RBI single.

LaPorte finally tallied a run against Kubacki, the Chesterton starter, in the fourth and then put three more on the board in the sixth.

The Trojans put the finishing touches on the victory in the top of the seventh as Rusboldt doubled with one out. Tyler Sufana followed with a double and Rusboldt scored. Brandon Roeske singled to plate Sufana to finish the scoring.

Teal worked the final two innings in relief and shut the door. Kubacki picked up the win with five innings of work and three strikeouts.

Offensively, Sufana had three hits to lead the Trojans, while Rusboldt and Kubacki each had two hits in the victory.
