The weather finally broke, at least for a day, and the boys track teams at the Chesterton Relays responded.

The competition broke 10 Relay records, including four by the host Trojans.

“I was extremely pleased and impressed with the way the kids came to compete today,” Chesterton coach John Snyder said. “I was really happy with the weather and I think that helped the kids get excited and run well.”

The Trojans broke a meet record in the 4x1600 (Thomas Halpin, Andrew Morris, Ryan Cutter, David Osborn), the Shuttle Hurdles (Matt Raffin, Jake Holth, Will Butz, Joe Michalik), 4x400 (Remy Lewis, Matt Raffin, Jon Watson, Joe Raffin) and the 3x300 Hurdles (Holth, Matt Raffin, Butz).

“The 4x1600 setting a record with four guys running great races was nice,” Snyder said. “Both hurdles teams were outstanding and the 4x400 put me in shock with the overall time they ran. It’s exciting to see where we are at this point in the year and where they might be able to go.

“All of those groups are capable of doing well in the Sectional and Regional.”

Chesterton’s Matt Raffin earned Relay MVP honors.

“Matt was just one of the kids that had a great day,” Snyder said. “We had some PR’s out of a ton of kids. David Raffin through 48-feet, 9-inches in the shot put. Kody Galloway jumped 21-feet in the long jump again.”

The Trojans also finished second in the long jump relay (Galloway, Dan Jensen, Aaron Knight), pole vault (Tony Smith, Rob Surber, Peter Fouts), shot put (David Raffin, Dan Dellumo, Andrew Brack), the 3x3200 (Osborn, Morris, Cutter), the Distance Medley (Chris Noel, Butz, Ian Smith, Halpin) and the Sprint Medley (Joe Raffin, Holth, Watson, Lewis).

“This is a little more difficult day because with so many relays you have to spread people out or involve more people,” Snyder said. “I kind of spread some people thin, like Remy Lewis who ran great but it probably cost him in the high jump.”

The Trojans return to the track on Tuesday when they host Michigan City and Crown Point beginning at 4:30 p.m.
