The Chesterton boys
tennis team opened its season with a third place finish in the four-team
South Bend St. Joe Invitational on Saturday.
Westfield took the
team title, followed by St. Joe, the Trojans and Ft. Wayne Dwenger.
“We saw a lot of
good things today against some big time competition,” Chesterton coach Tom
Bour said. “But, we also have plenty to work on this upcoming week at
Chesterton’s Matt Jewison finished 0-3 at No. 1, while the duo of Chad
Whelan (No. 2) and Nick Hanson (No. 3) both went 1-2 on the day.
Gaff finished a perfect 3-0 in the tournemant at No. 4 singles.
In doubles, all
four Trojan duos went 1-2.
At No. 1, Blake
Ellenwood and Luke Liapes beat St. Joe, while the No. 2 team of Paul Petro
and Drew Engels beat FW Dwenger.
At No. 3, Creighton
Gaff and James Navarro beat FW Dwenger and the No. 4 duo of Nate Rubino and
Azeez Lakhani finished second in their flight by winning a three-team
The Trojans return
to action on Wednesday when they host Penn beginning at 4:15 p.m.
