The weather has been difficult, but the calendar waits for no one.

After just one day at Sand Creek, the Chesterton boys golf team will tee it up for the season-opener tonight against Andrean, Boone Grove and Lowell.

“We’ve only had one day at our home course thanks to the weather and we woke up to snow,” Chesterton coach Kent Butler said. “We have some good guys coming back. We’ll be competitive in the conference race.”

Senior Zach Von Huben will man the top spot in the Trojans’ lineup.

“Zach has a really good short game,” Butler said. “He’s got great touch around the green. He can make a good number from just about anywhere.”

Junior John Kelley will log in at the number two spot.

“When John hits it solid, he plays well,” Butler said. “He can go really low when his swing is on.”

A trio of sophomore’s that includes Eric Richardson, Kyle Krol and Michael Zondor, will round out the final three varsity spots.

“The sophomores have made some really nice improvements to their games in the offseason,” Butler said. “They do have some inexperience and dealing with match jitters early on will be important for us. It’s the first varsity match for a couple of them. As we get into the season, I think they’ll settle in.”

The question for the Trojans may be consistency.

“What do you do when you have a guy or two not play well,” Butler said. “We’re always trying to avoid the big number. Make a bogey, not a triple.”

Also competing for varsity spots will be Nick Freel and Gabe Davis.
