There’s a pretty good rivalry at the top of the Duneland Athletic Conference between Chesterton and Lake Central.

On Monday at the Brassie, the road they are traveling took another turn.

The Trojans shot a best-ever 330-team score and ran away with a 15-stroke victory over the Indians (345). Valparaiso finished third (394).

“You can’t say too much about them,” Chesterton coach Dale Hewitt said. “They just played really well. I think they really just wanted it today. We’ve got a little more fire than we’ve had in the past.”

Chesterton did very little wrong on Monday and the score reflected that.

“That 330 is the best score we’ve ever had here,” Hewitt said. “Our best before this was probably in the low 370’s or maybe the high 360’s. To beat LC by 15 shots is surprising. They are really tough.”

The Trojans were led by Erin DeVaney’s 77. DeVaney lost in a playoff for medalist honors to LC’s Morgan Goldsmith.

“I’m really excited for Erin to break out like that,” Hewitt said. “I knew that was coming. She’s so level headed. She just chugs along from shot to shot.”

DeVaney proved that on the front nine when she carded a 38 even with a triple-bogey 8 on the Par 5, 4th hole.

“I hit two good shots and then hit it in the water,” DeVaney said. “I hit it on the green and three-putted. You just have to forget about it and move on.”

Easier said than done.

“After you have a bad hole, you can’t worry about it,” DeVaney said. “There’s no point. I’m just not going to worry about it. I quadruple bogeyed a hole last week and still shot 81. That was my best until today.”

That doesn’t mean that DeVaney stayed perfectly calm for all 18 holes.

“On 16, I realized I was going to probably shoot in the 70’s and finished bogey, bogey, bogey,” DeVaney said with a laugh.

DeVaney’s backup came from Allyse Kotso’s 79. Hayley Miller followed with an 86 and Raine Fox shot 88. Jessica O’Brien’s 90 rounded out the score.

“Second, third and fourth overall with two in the 70’s, that’s great,” Hewitt said. “We threw out a 90 and there’s been a lot of times that would have been our second best score.

“You knew Allyse would be there and I thought Erin would be with her, but for the bottom of the order to come through like that is really great.”

Neither Hewitt, nor DeVaney, was surprised with the day’s outcome.

“It was really important to win today,” DeVaney said. “It was a goal of ours. I’m not surprised. We just keep improving. I thought today was going to be the day and it was.”

“We had a great day,” Hewitt said. “Not too many teams around here would have beaten us today. The kids played great.

“But, we haven’t peaked. I think we can stay right at this level and keep on going.”
