5th ranked LaPorte tops Chesterton Girls

The No. 5 LaPorte Slicers stayed undefeated on the year Friday night with a 61-26 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Chesterton.

“They are good,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “I think they are better defensively than they are offensively. At times it was hard to just make a pass and do anything.”

The Trojans hit on just 10-of-36 shots (28 percent) from the field on the night and had only senior Caroline Puntillo score points until the 2:42 mark of the third quarter.

Puntillo scored 18 points, including the Trojans’ first 16.

“We had several shots at the basket that didn’t go in, but we have such a small margin for error that those have to go in for us to be competitive,” Campbell said. “We can’t afford not to make those.”

Chesterton did jump out to a 9-4 lead, but a 15-0 run to end the first quarter and start the second turned the tide and the Slicers never looked back.

“Our biggest concern was three’s,” Campbell said. “They have so many shooters that we wanted to stay with them on the perimeter as much as possible. That opens up things inside and on the dribble drive and they are able to do that too.

“That’s why they are undefeated.”

LaPorte hit on 23-of-48 shots from the field (48 percent) and were 8-of-16 (50 percent) from 3-point range. Jacklyn Heath led the Slicers with 16 points.
