Chesterton coach John Sparks already knew his team had won the Duneland
Athletic Conference title, he just didn’t know how convincingly.
It took nearly 90 minutes after the final putt was holed out before the
outcome of the DAC Tournament at The Brassie on Tuesday was officially over.
A disputed ruling bumped Chesterton’s Nick Stasil’s score from 83 to 88 and
gave Lake Central a 318-322 victory over the Trojans.
“When you have a couple of rules issues surrounding the same hole, it’s very
complicated,” Sparks said. “It’s not spelled out in the decisions book.
(Brassie PGA Professional) Duane (Borcherding) did a great job of working
through it and making the right decision. We even called the Indiana Golf
Association and the right decision was made.
“It just didn’t help us.”
The problem came when Stasil hit his drive off No. 1 (his 17th hole of the
day) left of the fairway near a bunker. A player coming down No. 2 apparently
played his ball and Stasil ended up playing the wrong ball. The dispute came
in whether the two-stroke penalty for playing the wrong ball was correct or
if it was a lost ball. The difference on the hole was five strokes.
“I’m pleased with the boys,” Sparks said. “We knew we needed to finish
seventh or better to win the conference. We did that and almost won the
tournament.”
Josh Kalita led the way for the Trojans by firing a pair of 38’s to card a
76, just one shot behind medalist Kyle Hackel of Lake Central.
“I hit the ball pretty solid all day and I putted decent,” Kalita said. “I
think playing out here in March with the wind blowing was a good experience
for us. You don’t like it, but it doesn’t bother you as much.”
Kalita started the day with a birdie on No. 1 and avoided potential disaster
a couple of times.
“I birdied No. 1 and that gets you off to a good start,” Kalita said. “I had
a couple of bad holes, but a couple of really good saves. I made a 25-footer
for bogey on 10 and made par on 18 after hitting my tee shot in the water.
“That’s two pretty good fives.”
Ryan Grassel was the second Trojan in with a solid 77 that included a 39 on
the front and a 38 on the back.
“It was brutal out there,” Sparks said. “At this place, the wind really
affects you. The fact that we’ve been outside every possible day you could be
since the season started helps us.
“We’ve played in horrible, cold, windy weather before.”
Kyle Grassel followed with an 81 for the Trojans. Stasil shot 88 and Pat
Herrod rounded out the scoring with a 91.
