The Chesterton baseball team took its show on the road for the first time
last weekend with a two-day trip to Lafayette and picked up a pair of wins.
The Trojans opened the weekend on Friday night with an 11-6 victory over
Lafayette Harrison and followed that with a 5-1 victory over Noblesville on
Saturday morning. Lafayette Jeff handed the only loss of the weekend to
Chesterton, 10-0, in Saturday’s finale.
“We sorted some things out a little bit,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell
said. “Zack (Novak) was our only returning position player and Steve Janes
was our only pitcher back. Most everybody else is new.
“Overall, I’m pretty pleased considering the inexperience we have out there.”
Against Lafayette Harrison, the Trojans pounded out 11 hits and put together
a seven-run fourth inning to pick up the win. Jack Wilson and Frank Raudry
each had a pair of hits in the victory.
“We continued our hitting barrage,” Campbell said. “ We got some key hits and
ran the bases well.”
The Trojans used three pitchers as Kevin Gates picked up the win, despite the
defense committing six errors.
“Kevin didn’t get ahead of a lot of hitters, but made some good pitches to
get himself out of things,” Campbell said. “Almost all of our errors were
throwing errors. That happens sometimes when you’ve been inside a lot.”
The Trojans (3-1) offense stayed hot on Saturday morning as they collected
nine hits in picking up the victory over Noblesville. John Thanos went
3-for-3 with three singles.
“We got hits when we needed them,” Campbell said.
Steve Janes got the start and worked two innings and allowed just one hit.
Glenn Peterson came on in relief to pick up his first varsity win.
“We started Steve and got him a couple of innings,” Campbell said. “Glenn
came in with five strong innings. He got ahead of hitters and we played well
defensively.”
The Trojans committed just two errors and saw great defensive plays made by
Gates (shortstop), Raudry (third base) and Ryan Lindquist (second base).
In game three, Lafayette Jeff jumped on top early against four Chesterton
pitchers and silenced the Trojans’ hot bats.
Chesterton picked up just four hits, two of those by Zack Novak, in the loss.
“The idea in the first five games was to get all out pitchers on the mound,”
Campbell said. “We’re carrying 10 and we needed to see what everybody can
do.”
Chesterton returns to the field on Tuesday when they open to Duneland
Athletic Conference play against Valparaiso at CHS.
The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
