It’s an individual sport, but every point is needed in the team total.
The Chesterton girls track team proved that on Tuesday night as they picked
up a 70-62 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Crown Point.
“It was kind of a weird meet,” Chesterton coach Steve Kearney said. “I didn’t
see too many places that we could have scored more points. CP beat us 45-35
in first place points, but our seconds and thirds outscored them 35-17 and
that’s the difference.
“We had to have all of those to pull it out.”
Chesterton senior Katie McColly picked up two individual first place finishes
(100, 200) and ran the anchor leg of the victorious 4x100. She also finished
second in the long jump to teammate Mallory Przybylinski.
“Katie had a great day,” Kearney said. “She’s stepped up in the sprints for
us with Megan (Erminger) out and came back from a tough weekend in the
4x100.”
Przybylinski not only won the long jump, but came up with a second place
finish in the 100 and a third in the 200.
“Mallory coming back from an illness yesterday and winning the long jump and
picking up a second in the 100 and third in the 200 is a great day,” Kearney
said. “And she ran a very good leg in the 4x100. That race was over after her
leg.”
The other double event winner for the Trojans was Brianne Guardiola. The
sophomore picked up wins in the 100 hurdles (17.08) and the 300 hurdles
(48.69).
The other standout performance mentioned by Kearney was the second place
finish of Maria Schuster in the shot put.
“Maria lagged 32-feet in the shot put,” Kearney said. “She got second place
and is becoming a shot putter for us. That was a big three points.”
The meet wasn’t decided until the pole vault finished as Chesterton’s Kelley
Freeman won the event and Chloe Lawson finished second.
“The pole vault became pretty important late in the meet and it was nice to
see Kelley and Chloe come through with a first and second,” Kearney said.
“It’s not that last (points) that wins the meet, but they are just as
important as the rest of them.”
The Trojans return to the track on Saturday when they travel to the Andrean
Relays for a 10 a.m. start.
