At least there wasn’t any rain.
The Chesterton girls track team split its Duneland Athletic Conference opener
on Wednesday night at Lake Central by dropping a 100-32 decision to the host
Indians and beating Michigan City 87-45.
“I thought we had some good front line performances, but we need our depth to
get better and score some more points for us,” Chesterton coach Steve Kearney
said. “We started to pick up a few wins and we need to find a way to get some
more seconds and thirds. Some of our top kids aren’t quite in shape enough to
run the four events we need them to.
“They have to be able to perform at a quality level in all their events. I
saw some of that, but not enough.”
Lake Central dominated the meet by winning 13 events, while Michigan City won
one and Chesterton won two.
The Trojans got victories from Katie Behrendt in the 400 (1:03.12) and
Allyson Harvey in the 800 (2:22.81).
“I was happy with the effort from Katie Behrendt in the 400,” Kearney said.
“Allyson Harvey in the 800 ran a great race and had a big time drop.”
Against Michigan City, the Trojans ended up with 1-2-3 performances in the
high jump, long jump and 400.
“Mallory (Przybylinski) and Marissa (Crafton) showed me the focus they have
with their long jump today,” Kearney said. “Both of them ran a really solid
race too. Brianne (Guardiola) was sick yesterday and just gutted out a race
in the 300 hurdles.”
The Trojans return to the track on Saturday when they host the Chesterton
Relays beginning at 10 a.m.
“Hopefully, we’ll get into some nice weather finally,” Kearney said. “If you
are competitive, you’re going to bring the times down. If you’ll work hard
when it’s cold out, it’ll only be easier when it gets warm.
“A lot of it now is how badly they want the times to come down.”
