The Lady Trojans track team, coming off sectional and regional titles in 2006, started off the season on the right note by posting an impressive victory over South Bend Adams and Gary Roosevelt. The Trojans came out on top after putting up 93 points to Adams' 39 and Roosevelt's 31. Senior Emily Leckenby was one of several Chesterton seniors who shined, winning both the shot put and discus events.

Leckenby, who is coming off an ACL injury suffered while playing soccer in the fall, captured the shot put with a distance of 36 feet 8 1/2 inches and the discus with a mark of 105 feet 4 1/2 inches.

Leckenby said, "It's good to come out and have a day like this where you build up some confidence. It was a bit surprising to do this well, because I wasn't expecting to be as good as I was last year."

Trojans' coach Steve Kearney said, "I may be overly optimistic, but we have four or five girls that have a real shot to compete at state and Emily's one of them."

Chesterton, typically a powerhouse in the long distances, will feature a more balanced squad this year. While many of the long distance runners are underclassmen, the Trojans' strong suit will be their more experienced sprinters, jumpers and throwers.

Kearney said, "People usually expect us to dominate in the distances, but this year it's the short distances and the hurdles where we're strongest. We're going to be a totally different look from last year, but I'm pleased with the younger distance girls who will still score us some points."

The Trojans' captured ten of the sixteen events, including all of the field events. Jordan Harris won the high jump, while freshman Megan Erminger beat out teammate Mallory Przybylinski in the long jump and Ashley Fozkos one upped her sister Brittany by an inch to win the pole vault.

South Bend Adams coach Bruce Urban said, "They (Chesterton) aren't as deep as they were last year, but they're still solid. They're the kind of team that can give us the good stiff competition that we need going into conference."

Milana Socha turned in an impressive performance in the long distances winning the 3200 meter with a time of 12:31 and anchoring the winning 3200 relay team.

Leckenby said," It's kind of early to tell if we can come together like we did last year, but I think that if we can pick up some third and fourth place finishes we could do pretty well."
