Everything has a standard by which it is judged.
For programs in the Duneland Athletic Conference that
standard is now the Chesterton Boys Swimming program after the Trojans won
their 13th consecutive league title Saturday at Crown Point.
Chesterton’s 489 points outdistanced second-place Crown Point
(360) and tied the Portage Wrestling program’s 13 consecutive league titles.
“In this streak, we’ve had a lot of kids who have been sick
or something else and the team has always come first,” Chesterton coach
Kevin Kinel said. “They’ve gone out and done their very best to keep this
thing going. I tried to point that out to the kids. There are a lot of
people who have put a lot of blood and a lot of sweat into this program to
get this streak to where it is.
“We needed to step up to honor those guys.”
The Trojans came out of the gate fast with the quartet of
Kyle Whitaker, Matt Rosiecki, Bill Bass and Tyler Fozkos winning the 200
Medley Relay (1:36.22).
“We really wanted to set the tone during the first half of
the meet,” Whitaker said. “The 13th title was really important. Coach had us
take a look up at the (conference) board (in the CHS pool) to see the streak
of championships. We didn’t want to let those guys down that got us to this
point.
“The streak has become a Trojan tradition.”
Bill Bass won the first of his two individual titles with a
win in the 200 Free (1:44.49). He also took top honors in the 500 Free
(4:43.51).
“Billy was swimming a little under the weather today,” Kinel
said. “You have to give him credit for swimming great and with a lot of
guts.”
Whitaker would win the first of his two individual titles
with a victory in the 200 IM (1:50.05). Later, he would win the 100 Fly
(49.71). Both times were Pool and DAC records.
“The IM was definitely a good swim and it was my best time of
the season,” Whitaker said. “It’s a good indicator of where I am now heading
toward State. I really wanted to break 1:50, but it was pretty close.”
Tyler Fozkos won the first of his two individual titles in
the 50 Free (21.38) as the Trojans won the first four events in the pool.
The sophomore also won the 100 Fee (47.66).
“Tyler was a double-winner today,” Kinel said. “He had two
great performances and swam great on the relays.”
But, for Kinel, those were expected results. The conference
title came down to the great swims of the second and third level kids.
“Coming into this year, we had lost a lot of depth,” Kinel
said. “We knew some other kids were going to have to come through for us and
they have. I’m awfully pleased.”
Kinel had no shortage of kids to talk about when he
highlighted the success of his depth on Saturday.
“Nate Schuster had two huge swims for us today,” Kinel said.
“Nick Teall had two geat swims with best times in the 50 and 100 Free. Josh
Gerber in the 100 Free had his best time by a mile.
“Taylor Zakhar’s 500 Free and Ethan Hall’s backstroke were
great swims. Drake Belt’s two swims were best times too.”
The other victory for the Trojans came in the 400 Free Relay
when the foursome of Whitaker, Hall, Zakhar and Bass took top honors in
3:14.81.
Chesterton returns to the pool on Tuesday night when they
host Highland beginning at 6 p.m.
