The Chesterton High School winter sports season isn’t complete yet, but
Wednesday Night multiple athletes with a long list of accomplishments were
honored at the 2010 Winter Sports Awards Program.
On the team front, the boys and girls swim teams picked up fourth place
finishes at the IHSAA State Finals, while the girls basketball team won the
Sectional title and advanced to the Regional finals.
Individually, wrestler Anthony Quiroz finished fifth at the State Finals
with teammate Chris Katsafaros also advancing to Indianapolis. In girls
swimming, Olivia Kabacinski was the runner-up at the State Finals in the 50
and 100 Free.
In boys swimming, Tyler Fozkos finished second in the 50 Free with Blake
Pieroni finishing runner-up in the 200 Free. Aaron Whitaker also finished
tied for second in the 100 Fly.
The No. 3 ranked CHS gymnastics team will try to continue the winter sports
season another week as they travel to Valparaiso for the IHSAA Regional on
Friday night beginning at 6 p.m. The Trojans will be looking for their sixth
straight and 14th berth in the State Finals.
Winners of MVP awards for the third time in their career were Tyler Fozkos
(Boys Swimming) and Olivia Kabacinski (Girls Swimming). Two-time winners
include Claire Holba (Girls Basketball), Alex Olson (Boys Diving), Marissa
Kroeger (Girls Diving) and Chris Katsafaros (Wrestling).
Other MVP honors included Jordan Peterson (Boys Basketball), KeMonte Price
(Boys Basketball), Brooke Gardner (Boys Basketball), Joel Gillespie
(Cheerleading), Samantha Wilburn (Gymnastics), Emily Kozak (Gymnastics),
Blake Pieroni (Boys Swimming) and Anthony Quiroz (Wrestling).
Mental Attitude award winners included KeMonte Price (Boys Basketball),
Lindsay Gorman (Girls Basketball), Bre Eng (Cheerleading), Elizabeth Kozak
(Gymnastics), Nick Brahos (Boys Swimming), Lauren Foor (Girls Swimming),
Maddie Miller (Girls Swimming) and Vicente Quiroga (Wrestling).
Sportsmanship award winners were Nathan Apathy (Boys Basketball), Maddie
Houpt (Girls Basketball), Riley Taubert (Girls Basketball), Alexis Hamilton
(Cheerleading), Mariel McElfresh (Gymnastics), Chris McGue (Boys Swimming),
Kate Curley (Girls Swimming) and Will Butz (Wrestling).
Most Improved awards went to K.J. Zelenika (Boys Basketball), Cole Teal
(Boys Basketball), Alyssa White (Girls Basketball), Hannah Ranfranz
(Cheerleading), Brandi Tuzinski (Gymnastics), Ethan Whitaker (Boys Swimming
Freshman), Spencer Wright (Boys Swimming Sophomore), Collin Buckles (Boys
Swimming Junior), Austin Roach (Boys Diving), Stephanie Krause (Girls
Swimming Freshman), Julia Campbell (Girls Swimming Sophomore), Mae Bass
(Girls Swimming Sophomore), Marcy Miles (Girls Swimming Junior), Cheyanne
Comer (Girls Diving) and Ryley Harlow (Wrestling).
Other special awards were given to Reva Key (Todd Talbert Memorial Award in
Girls Basketball), Mariel McElfresh (Maroon & Gold Award in Gymnastics),
Jaycee Jensen (Freshman Dedication Award in Wrestling) and Adam Scheerer
(Sophomore Dedication Award in Wrestling).
