Streak’s are usually a fragile thing. Sometimes you wear the
same thing to a game. Sometimes you eat the same things. It becomes a habit.
There’s no telling what Chesterton girls swim coach Kevin
Kinel must do as his Trojans won their 10th consecutive Duneland Athletic
Conference championship on Saturday.
“It’s really special and it’s hard to do in a conference like
this,” Kinel said. “There are so many great kids and great coaches. It’s a
milestone.”
The Trojans had little trouble in garnering 497 points to
beat runner-up Crown Point (392) by more than 100. Lake Central was third
with 336 points.
“We swam awfully fast today,” Kinel said. “Hopefully we got a
little glimpse of Sectionals and State and get everybody excited for the end
of the year.”
Chesterton set the stage for the day with a DAC, Pool and
School record performance in the 200 Medley Relay from the quartet of
Brittany Fozkos, Olivia Kabacinski, Meaghan McLaughlin and Mallory
Przybylinski.
The group finished in 1:48.61, more than five seconds ahead
of second place Crown Point, shattering the school record that had been set
at the State Finals in 2000.
“That was fast,” Kinel understated. “That kind of turned the
switch for them I think and ignited the whole day. We’ve gone 1:49-low
before and we always swim fast here. I knew there was a chance.”
Olivia Kabacinski followed her leg of the Relay with a
victory in the 200 Free (1:52.36). Later she would set the DAC record in the
100 Breast (1:06.08).
“We knew she had a chance to break a conference record,”
Kinel said. “What can you say about her? She’s a real talent and works hard
in practice. She’s only a freshman, so she should only get better.”
“My day was pretty great,” Kabacinski said. “I just felt good
today. We all swam well and there was a lot of energy here.”
Meaghan McLaughlin followed with the first of her two DAC
individual titles with a victory in the 200 IM (2:11.54). She also won the
100 Fly in 59.67.
“Meghan had a good, solid day,” Kinel said. “It’s nice to get
a little trial run before the Sectional. I was really pleased with her
performances today.”
“I was really happy about my times and the way I swam today,”
McLaughlin said. “My times are a lot better than they were at this time last
year.”
The day’s biggest surprise for the Trojans came in the 50
Free when Mallory Przybylinski edged teammate Brittany Fozkos (24.69-24.73).
Przybylinski also took top honors in the 100 Free (54.32).
“Mallory surprised everybody but herself probably,” Kinel
said. “She’s always been a big meet swimmer for us. She went nuts today and
you just can’t give her enough accolades for it.”
“This was the greatest swimming day of my life,” Przybylinski
said. “I wasn’t expected to win either of my events, so to win was great. I
was really pumped up today and my turns were really on. I’ve been working
really hard at those and today they were good.”
Przybylinski’s biggest focus wasn’t on winning in the 50 and
she took some words of advice from the coaching staff to win the 100.
“I’ve never beaten Brittany before, but I just wanted us to
go 1-2,” Przybylinski said. “That’s all I care about. In the 100, the
coaches told me to swim it like two 50’s. I really focused on it being two
separate things and it worked well for me.”
The other two Trojan victories came in the 200 and 400 Free
Relays. In the 200, Przybylinski, Shauna Foor, Milana Socha and Kabacinski
won in 1:38.23.
In the 400, Foor, Maddie Miller, McLaughlin and Fozkos won in
3:39.71.
Chesterton returns to the pool on Tuesday when the boys and
girls teams host Portage beginning at 6 p.m.
