It looks a lot closer than it really was.

The Chesterton girls swim team picked up its 11th straight Duneland Athletic Conference title Saturday at Crown Point.

“I think for me, because I’ve been around for all of them, it means more to me than it probably does to the kids,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “They kind of expect it. I realize what it is.”

The Trojans scored 413 team points to beat the host Bulldogs (344). Lake Central was third (312) and Valparaiso was fourth (271).

“We were seeded ahead by a lot, so it was hard to keep your focus,” Kinel said. “I think that was a problem. When I look at things, we really did have a lot of season best times.”

The close score was aided by Chesterton forfeiting 40 points after being disqualified in the 200 Free Relay, an event they won and set a DAC record in.

“Those things do happen and I feel bad for the kids,” Kinel said. “They had a DAC record taken away, but that happens sometimes. I don’t fault the kids. If you want to compete at the State level, you have to take risks. It’s a timing issue and something we have to work on.”

The Trojans won all but three events in the pool and got double victories from Olivia Kabacinski (200 Free, 100 Breast), Brittany Fozkos (50 Free, 100 Back) and Meaghan McLaughlin (200 IM, 100 Fly).

“Olivia does what she does,” Kinel said. “There was nobody really seeded near her and she just continued to step up and be excellent. Meaghan was seeded to win in the IM, but was second in the Fly. She used her turns and some strategy things we’ve been working on.

“She had a great finish to win the Fly. She’s swimming great and she’s on her lifetime bests.”

Fozkos earned DAC MVP honors with her individual victories and two wins on relays.

“Brittany really did have a great day,” Kinel said. “I think she was really looking forward to this Meet and proving some things to herself. I think she knows we are getting to the end of the year and it’s time.

“Her backstroke was a lifetime best too. She had season bests in both Relay legs.”

All in all, it was just another meet for the Trojans.

“There were some positive things that came out of it,” Kinel said. “The front end of the meet we were winning events, but didn’t have great times. After diving, we talked to the kids and started swimming better. The DQ kind of fired everybody up. We got a little more excited and wanted to make up for it.

“Excluding the relays, we had 10 individual season best times. In the relays, they were faster than we’ve been all year.”

The Trojans now will look toward the end of the season as they return to the pool on Tuesday at Portage.

“We don’t have anything big for a while now,” Kinel said. “We get to get back to training.”
