DNR awards rehab design grant for Memorial Opera House

Back To Front Page

The Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso has received a $35,000 grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to design a rehabilitation of the structure.

The $35,000 has been specifically awarded to the Porter County Commissioners and will be used to prepare plans and specifications for rehabilitating the Memorial Opera House.

Items to be addressed include the building exterior, interior plaster walls, mechanical systems, plumbing, HVAC, electrical systems and the auditorium floor.

The design document, when completed, will be used to kick-start local fundraising efforts needed to execute the work at a later date.

The grant is one of several--totaling $165,672--in National Park Service funds allotted to the DNR Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. The grants will be matched by $140,385 in local and private funds, for a total investment of $306,057. Since 1974, the DNR has awarded more than $18 million to Indiana communities through the program.
