Auditor: Citizens have until August 29 to petition against county CCD tax rate

Porter County Auditor Bob Wichlinski announced Wednesday that the petition to remonstrate on the proposed tax rate increase to the Porter County Capital Cumulative Development (CCD) Fund from the existing rate of 0.0189 to 0.0233 is available in the Porter County Auditorís Office (155 Indiana Avenue, Suite 204, Valparaiso) weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Only one person per taxable parcel affected by the rate increase may sign the petition. The deadline to sign the petition is 12 p.m. local time on Aug. 29, 2014.

Wichlinski said there had been some confusion over when the deadline was because the County Commissioners made a correction to the ordinance on July 29, having initially approved the ordinance at their meeting on July 15. The state gives residents a 30-day period to make remonstrations to their local county auditorís office after notice of approval so the deadline has officially been reset for Aug. 29 at noon, Wichlinski said.

If the petition should receive the signatures of 50 valid taxpayers affected by the rate increase, the rate would be subject to a public hearing on a date fixed by the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) before issuing its approval, disapproval, or modification of the proposed rate, Wichlinski said.
