Tara Fraley is Fair Queen: Chesterton High School
graduate Tara Fraley was crowned Porter County Fair Queen at last week’s
pageant on opening night of the 155th annual Porter County 4-H Fair. She was
also named Miss Congeniality in the pageant. Fraley was sponsored by Porter
Barber and Stylist Shop. A 10 year 4-H member, Fraley has been extra busy
this week, with her Queen duties and her competition schedule with Double D
Pleasure, or “Stinky” as the 5 year-old Quarter Horse gelding is better
known. She has competed in the English Pleasure and Equitation classes and
will also do Western Pleasure and Equitation and Contesting, like barrel
racing. Plus she has seven horses at home to take care of. Fraley, already
studying welding at Ivy Tech, plans to pursue an education in farrier work
(horseshoeing) in Illinois this fall, with the eventual goal of becoming a
professional horse trainer. She’s worked with Stinky for three years and has
also shown through the International Quarter Horse Association with Stinky’s
brother. She hopes soon to acquire another quarterhorse, Stinky’s sister. On
Tuesday she was fresh from a Queenly appearance at the livestock arena,
preparing herself and her horse for show, memorizing the show ring pattern
with the help of her Mom, while looking for a jacket and belt to complete
her costume. Later, she was due at a dress-up VIP banquet with Fair board
members and county officials.

Enjoying Dinner at the fair: Mark Brown and his daughter
Emily, age 10, are shown in the poultry barn enjoying dinner by the Leroy’s
Mexican Food booth at the Porter County Fairgrounds. Many found shelter
around dinner time during the big rain storm which hit our area and cooled
everything off on Tuesday evening. (Tribune photo by Dana Gilbertson)

Refuge from the storm: Chesterton’s Mary and Frank
Kamaski are shown before the storm Tuesday with grandaughter Katie Casbon.
Katie is keeping warm cuddled between her grandparents on the Midway at the
Porter County Fair after the quick temperature change.
