Interest is strong in the Porter County Coroner’s race, with four Democrats and one Republican filing for the position, which pays $25,000 annually.

Incumbent Coroner Victoria Deppe recently announced that she will resign her position, leaving a vacancy that will be filled by a Democrat caucus. Deppe, a nurse practitioner, is taking a position as a wound care specialist at a regional hospital.

In other filings, Duneland’s representative on the Porter County Council, Bob Poparad, filed for re-election. Meanwhile, a three-way Republican primary battle is on for the 1st District U.S. House seat.

The filing deadline ends at noon Feb. 19 for the May primary.
