The Center Township Democratic Committee is spearheading a petition drive for a voter referendum on whether Valparaiso should have an elected school board.

The petition drive will officially start on Jan. 23. If the petition drive is successful, the voter referendum would be placed on the November, 2012 ballot, said CTDC Chairman Kevin Cornett.

“Many of the people in the Valparaiso School district feel the school board is not being responsive to their concerns,” Cornett said. “We need to explore having an elected, not appointed, school board.”

The Valparaiso School Board is one of the few remaining appointed school boards in Indiana and is believed to be the only appointed school board in Northwest Indiana.

Only registered voters in the Valparaiso School Corporation can sign the petition. For more information, email centerdem@gmail.com or call Kevin Cornett at 219-548-8891.
