A Portage woman was
struck by a vehicle and killed on Monday as she was trying to cross U.S.
Highway 20, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris reported today.
The victim was
identified as Marguerite McIntosh, 62.
According to
Portage Police, the accident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. in the 5700
block of U.S. 20, near the Zip Foods, as McIntosh was attempting to cross
from the north side of the roadway. Police said that she was hit by an
eastbound SUV whose driver “slammed on his brakes” in an unsuccessful effort
to avoid a collision.
McIntosh was
pronounced dead at the scene of massive blunt force trauma, Harris said. He
added that McIntosh had just emerged from a wooded trail when she stepped
onto U.S. 20.
“Initial
investigations do not indicate that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the
crash,” police said, although a routine toxicology screen will be conducted.
