VPD: Homemade explosive devices being found in Valparaiso

Back To Front Page

Valparaiso Police are warning people not to touch any suspicious objects or devices, after multiple homemade explosives have been found in the city.

At deadline today, the VPD was investigating five separate incidents in which a homemade explosive device was found. In several of those cases, the device had already detonated.

The devices were discovered in the 1500 block of Boca Lago Drive, the 2900 block of Prentiss Drive, the 3600 block of Goodrich Road, and the 1350 block of Jade Blvd.

In each case a plastic bottle has been filled and mixed with “a everyday common substance and a household chemical,” resulting in an explosion.

Persons who locate an unexploded device should not touch or remove it, the VPD said. “The chemicals inside the bottle along with the warm temperatures make the device very dangerous and unpredictable.”

Anyone with information about these incidents is urged to call the VPD at 462-2135 or text a tip to TIP411 (847-411) and enter the keyword “Valpo” in the message field prior to sending a message.
