A Valparaiso resident has agreed to plead guilty to a charge of stealing from the Valparaiso Community Schools, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana said.

Julie A. Schroeder, 51, agreed last week to plead guilty to a charge of theft from a program receiving federal funds, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

The indictment against Schroeder, filed on July 17, states that the theft occurred between Jan. 1, 2012, and Dec. 31, 2012, during which time Schroeder--“an agent and employee of Valparaiso Community Schools”--“did knowingly and intentionally embezzle, steal, obtain by fraud, and otherwise without authority convert to her own use” moneys in excess of $10,000.

The plea agreement specifies an amount between $30,000 and $70,000 and in that agreement Schroeder undertakes to pay restitution to the Valparaiso Community Schools in the amount of $37,750.15.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Schroeder would be entitled to a two-point reduction in the offense level “for acceptance of responsibility”; but agrees also to a two level increase “for abuse of a position of trust.”

Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 20. The case was investigated by the FBI.
