The Indiana State Police is seeking the man who shot a Valparaiso motorist, in what is being described as a road rage incident, on I-80/94 in Lake County on Wednesday.

According to police, shortly after 4 p.m. the 48-year-old Valparaiso man was on his way home from work, when he merged onto eastbound I-80/94 from southbound Cline Ave., cutting in front of a silver or gray Dodge Ram 1500 pickup while doing so and apparently angering the other vehicle’s driver.

The victim, continuing eastbound, then noticed the driver of the Dodge pull alongside him, roll down his window, and begin yelling at him, police said. With no interest in a confrontation, the victim sped up, positioned himself in the far left lane, and tried to put distance between himself and the Dodge’s driver, who for his part followed in the middle lane.

Then the victim heard a “loud bang and thought at first he had been hit with a brick,” police said, but quickly realized that his rear window had been shattered and that he had been shot in the upper back, with the bullet exiting his body through the front part of his shoulder, police said.

The victim was able to retrieve the bullet when he removed his shirt.

The suspect fled the scene, veering across all lanes of eastbound I-80/94 and exiting onto southbound Ripley Street. The victim, meanwhile, pulled his vehicle onto the shoulder just east of the exit for southbound Ripley Street.

The suspect was described as a middle-aged black male with very short hair, driving a silver or gray Dodge Ram 1500 pickup.

The victim was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The ISP is asking anyone with information on the shooting or the suspect to call Det. Mike Bailey at (219) 690-0039.
