A Valparaiso man was being held today at the Porter County Jail in connection with the shooting death on Wednesday of a Kouts man.

The shooting occurred just before 5 a.m. at the apartment of Abraham Bratcher, 34, at 3105 Black Partridge Lane, Valparaiso Police said.

Found dead at the scene: Gerid Forste, 31.

Bratcher himself called 911, police said, and later told investigators that, in the course of an altercation, he shot Forste multiple times.

VPD Sgt. Mike Grennes identified the weapon today as an AR-15 type rifle.

An autopsy was scheduled for today and charges are pending as the Porter County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office reviews the case.
