From the Valparaiso Police Department: This morning at 10:05 a.m.
officers responded to 2612 Calumet Ave. for a report of a male subject
entering the building with a gun.
Officers arrived on scene and a brief exchange of gun fire occurred between
the gunman and police. One employee initially exited the building with a
head injury received from the gunman, not a gun shot. She was transported to
Porter Hospital and has since been treated and released.
All other hostages were released unharmed.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. officers heard a gunshot inside the building and
made entry into the building. Officers then located the gunman with two
self-inflicted gunshot wounds to his head. He was immediately transported to
Porter Hospital and has since died from his injuries.
Identification of the subject is pending notification of family members.
Law enforcement agencies from Valparaiso, Porter County Sheriff's
Department, FBI, Valparaiso University, Portage, Valparaiso Fire/EMS,
Chesterton and Indiana State Police assisted at the scene.
The roadways have since been re-opened in the area. The incident is still
under investigation.
