A seventh-grader at Thomas Jefferson Middle School was detained on Friday after Valparaiso Police said that he was found to have a knife in his locker.

According to police, on Friday morning, school officials received information from several students that a seventh-grade boy had been displaying a large knife or dagger on the bus earlier in the day and was believed still to be in possession of it.

The school resource officer subsequently searched the boy’s locker and a large knife was located inside.

The student gave officials “conflicting explanations” for having brought the knife to school, police said.

He was taken into custody on a delinquency charge of possession of a knife on school property and transported to the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center.
