Two staffers at
Indiana State Prison in Michigan City were stabbed on Thursday by a
convicted murderer, the Indiana Department of Correction (DOC) said.
According to DOC,
at 6:57 a.m. prison officers responding to an activated emergency signal in
the Laundry Department found two staffers injured and inmate James Utley
armed with an edged weapon.
“The emergency team
had to use available resources to secure the scene,” DOC said.
The staffers were
transported to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Michigan City. One was
released and has already returned to work, DOC said; the other was being
held for further testing but was expected to be released soon.
Utley himself
received medical attention at Franciscan St. Anthony following the incident
for unspecified injuries, DOC said.
Utley, convicted in
Shelby County of two counts of murder and one of burglary, has an earliest
possible released date of Oct. 31, 2072, DOC said.
