Two motorists
sustained incapacitating injuries on Wednesday after colliding in the
intersection of Ind. 49 and C.R. 950N, Chesterton Police said.
According to
police, at 10:25 a.m. Hannah M. Vasquez, 19, of Liberty Township, was
eastbound on C.R. 950N and stopped at the stop sign for Ind. 49 when she
attempted to cross the intersection, after waiting for traffic to clear. On
entering the intersection, Vasquez was struck on the front driver’s side by
a second vehicle southbound in the left lane of Ind. 49.
The driver of the
second vehicle was David P. Sexton, 74, of South Bend.
Vasquez advised
police that she didn’t see Sexton.
Both drivers
sustained chest injuries--described by the CPD as “incapacitating”--and were
transported to hospital, police said. Both were also wearing seatbelts at
the time of the crash.
Police estimated
total damage to Vasquez’s 2012 Nissan Versa and Sexton’s 2000 Honda Accord
at up to $25,000.
