Two persons were injured in a four-vehicle accident early this morning on I-94 near Chesterton, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, Alfonso Luna Jr., 26, of Michigan City was eastbound on I-94, near the 27 mile marker one mile east of the Chesterton exit, when he attempted to move from the middle to the left lane. Police said that Luna’s 2009 Mitsubishi struck the right rear of a 2005 Dodge Caravan driven by Victor Lopez, 53, of Valparaiso.

Luna lost control of his Mitsubishi, which hit the concrete median barrier and ricocheted into the eastbound travel lanes, in the process colliding with a third vehicle, a 2006 GMC Denali driven by James Golden, 27, of Kalamazoo, Mich., police said.

Luna’s Mitsubishi finally came to rest in the right lane, where--its lights no longer functioning--it was rear-ended by a 2001 Chevrolet driven by Tina Mulinaro, 49, of Valparaiso.

Luna was transported to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City with a complaint of back pain, police said, while Mulinaro was transported to Porter Regional Hospital with possible broken ribs.

Golden complained of knee pain but refused medical treatment at the scene and Lopez escaped injury, police said.

Luna was issued a citation for following too closely and Mulinaro a citation for false/fictitious registration, police said.

Luna’s Mitsubishi and Mulinaro’s Chevrolet were totaled, while Lopez’s Dodge and Golden’s GMC each sustained around $2,500 in damage, police added.

The Chesterton Fire Department assisted at the scene.
