Two drownings reported in Dunes National Park

The Porter County Coroner’s Office is reporting two drownings on Sunday at Indiana Dunes National Park.

The first occurred at 10:47 a.m., when Mohamed Obied, 16, of Bridgeview, Ill., was reported missing at Portage Lakefront. “Mohamed was one of a group of five swimmers who were struggling in the rough waters of Lake Michigan.” His body was recovered from the water by a Portage Fire Department diver some 24 hours later, at 10:52 a.m. Monday.

The second drowning occurred on Sunday afternoon, when Moath Nagi, 21, of Rockford, Ill., was transported from Porter Beach to Porter Regional Hospital, after he was “rescued from being underwater for an extended period of time.” Nagi subsequently died in the ICU at 11:57 p.m. Sunday.
