Trucker cited in crash; I80/94 closed in Lake

A trucker traveling too fast for snowy road conditions crashed his rig on Wednesday on I-80/94 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 10:15 a.m. trucker Juan M. Munoz, 39, of Hammond, was westbound on I-80/94, near the 14.9 mile marker, when he passed an ISP trooper en route--his emergency lights activated--to an earlier crash. As Munoz himself approached that crash scene, he “locked up the brakes, causing the semi to jackknife and hit the inside barrier wall,” police said.

Munoz’s load of sheet metal came loose from the trailer and was scattered across all three lanes, forcing the closure of I-80/94, police said.

Munoz, in the meantime, came to rest approximately 10 yards from the crash to which the ISP trooper was headed at the time.

Munoz was issued a citation for speed too fast for conditions, police said.

Some 51,000 pounds of sheet metal was strewn across the roadway, police added.
