A local resident extracted his mother-in-law from his vehicle after it rolled into a pond Wednesday in Liberty Township, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.

According to police, at 11:02 a.m., police responded to 751 North CR 50 West and observed a grey 2013 Ford F150 4x4 truck fully submerged in the pond about 10 feet from the shoreline.

Resident Herbert Nowak, 61, advised that he had parked his vehicle near the pond with his mother-in-law Connie Rinchak, 89, in the passenger seat so she could enjoy the scenery while he played with his dogs, police said.

Police said Nowak was on his phone with his wife and had thought he had put his vehicle in park when he exited. He then observed the vehicle start to head into the pond and yelled to his wife to call for help, police said.

Nowak managed to pull Rinchak from the vehicle and was further assisted by PCSP Sgt. Jesse Klemz who took both subjects back to shore with a pool skimmer that was located nearby, police said.

Rinchak was transported to Porter Regional Hospital for cold water exposure, police said. No one was charged or injured in the incident.

Also assisting at the scene were the Liberty Township Fire Department, Chesterton Fire Department, Porter Regional EMS and Joe’s Towing.
