Department of Natural Resources is investigating the drowning of a teen in
Lake Michigan on Monday, off Washington Park in Michigan City.
The victim was
identified as Travis Mensha, 14, of Michigan City.
According to the
DNR, at 6:11 p.m. Mensha and another boy--Joseph Zaknoun, 14, also of
Michigan City--were swimming near the break wall when they began to
struggle. Zaknoun was “able to self-rescue to the nearby break wall,” the
DNR said, but Mensha “disappeared under the water approximately 175 feet
Divers with the
Michigan City Fire Department, the DNR, and the U.S. Coast Guard undertook a
search for Mensha and succeeded in recovering him at 7:07 p.m., the DNR
said. Mensha was rushed to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Michigan City,
where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The DNR is
investigating the incident.
