An Indiana State Police trooper’s squad car was hit early this morning while the trooper was standing outside it at an earlier crash scene.

According to police, at 4:35 a.m. Trooper Brandon Henderson responded to a one-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-65, one mile north of the 61st Avenue exit, where Ryan P. Scheidt, 26, of Lake Village, had hit a slick spot, spun out, and struck the guardrail on the outer shoulder.

Henderson had parked his fully marked and lighted squad car behind Scheidt’s 2002 Dodge Ram and Henderson was outside it, talking to Scheidt, when Chris A. Bracamontes, 27, of Merrillville, also hit a slick spot, spun out, and struck Henderson’s 2012 Dodge Charger squad car in the rear, pushing it into Scheidt’s Dodge Ram, police said.

Neither Henderson nor Scheidt was injured, police said. Bracamontes--who was issued a citation for driving while suspended--was transported to Saint Mary’s Medical Center in Hobart with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The 2012 Dodge Charger police car was totaled.
