A Valparaiso man has been charged with 23 felonies in connection with the
molestation of a Chesterton boy which investigators say was actually
committed at his behest—and recorded—by a Wanatah woman, the Indiana State
Police said.
Ryan Schroeder,
26, has been charged in Porter County with aiding in child molestation,
aiding in child exploitation, possession of child pornography, aiding in
voyeurism, and aiding in theft, police said.
All told,
Schroeder is facing five Class A felonies, each punishable by a term of 20
to 50 years; eight Class C felonies, each punishable by a term of two to
eight years; and 10 Class D felonies, each punishable by a term of six
months to three years.
The ISP’s
original investigation began on Oct. 24, when an anonymous caller reported
receiving, via e-mail, photographs and videos of a woman molesting a young
boy, under the age of 5. That caller—who initially contacted the LaPorte
County Sheriff’s Police and the Department of Social Services—identified the
woman as Tara Tryon, 21, of Wanatah, and stated her belief that Tryon was
residing in Valparaiso.
An ISP detective
subsequently viewed the 39 images and two videos in question, confirmed that
they showed Tryon committing “numerous acts of deviate conduct” on the boy,
and was able to identify the boy as a Chesterton resident, police said.
Tryon was taken
into custody at her Valparaiso residence on Oct. 27 and later charged with
five counts of child molesting, a Class B felony punishable by a term of six
to 20 years; and eight Class C felony counts.
The boy’s
parents, after viewing cropped images, confirmed the setting in the photos
and videos to be their son’s bedroom, police said, while also confirming
that Tryon had baby-sat for them at their home in Chesterton.
Now police say
that Schroeder, Tryon’s former boyfriend, “allegedly asked Tryon to do the
molestation and also received photos of the child molestation on his cell
phone.”
Schroeder is
currently in the U.S. Navy and serving in Jacksonville, Fla., where the
Naval Criminal Investigative Service took him into custody on Monday. He is
being held at the Jacksonville County Jail and is awaiting extradition to
Porter County.
Schroeder was
not in the Navy at the time in question.
