All travel lanes on westbound I-80 in Lake County were closed on Tuesday
afternoon after a semi-tractor trailer lost part of its load, the Indiana
State Police said.
According to police, at 1:28 p.m. trucker Philip Johnson, 50, of Haviland,
Ohio, was westbound on I-80, just west of Burr Street, when he braked
sharply to avoid colliding with another semi which had pulled out in front
of him. Johnsonís load of 46,641 pounds of aluminum sheeting then shifted
and slid forward, the load was unloosed, and about a quarter of the sheeting
spilled across all lanes of traffic, police said.
Johnson escaped injury and no vehicles were struck by the aluminum but
motorists were forced to use both shoulders until around 2:30 p.m., when the
three left lanes were re-opened. All lanes were re-opened by 3 p.m., police
Johnson was issued a citation for an expired medical card, police said. His
rig was owned by J. Trans of Fort Wayne.
