Martin Binders Jewelers was the victim of a smash-and-grab burglary on Wednesday, the second such burglary in less than a week in Porter County.

According to Valparaiso Police, at 4:46 a.m. officers were dispatched to Binders at 23 E. Lincolnway, in response to an activated alarm. On their arrival they discovered that a lower glass pane in the front door had been broken.

“Numerous suspects” are then believed to have entered the business, where they shattered multiple glass display cases and removed merchandise, police said.

It was not immediately known how much jewelry was stolen or its value.

The Binders job occurred two days after a similar burglary, on Monday, of Jeffrey’s Jewelers at 330 W. U.S. Highway 30 in Union Township.

According to the Porter County Sheriff’s Police, at 6:28 a.m. officers were dispatched to the business, again in response to an activated alarm, and found on their arrival that the front glass door had been broken. Inside the store two display cases were shattered and jewelry with an approximate value of $1,000 stolen.

In this incident police estimated total damage and loss at $2,850.
