A semi pulling a box trailer caught fire Wednesday during morning rush hours
causing traffic northbound on I-65 to come to a standstill.
Preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police revealed that at
approximately 7:32 a.m. an orange 2006 Freightliner semi pulling a box
trailer, driven by Christopher Woodard, 35 of Park Forest, Illinois, was
northbound on I-65 near the Ridge Road exit when he noticed smoke coming
from his exhaust stacks. Shortly, thereafter his semi tractor began to burn.
Woodard’s tractor became fully engulfed and his box trailer loaded with
canned food sustained smoke damage. The semi was owned by Schneider National
Carriers out of Gary, Indiana. Woodard was not injured. The semi was coming
from Gas City, Indiana headed to Chicago.
All lanes northbound on I-65 were shut down to extinguish the fire. South
bound lanes were affected due to heavy smoke coming across the interstate.
All lanes northbound were re-opened at 9:08 a.m., police said.
