Semi burns on Toll Road near Michigan City today

All eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road were closed in LaPorte County early this morning after a semi-tractor trailer loaded with potatoes caught fire in an accident, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 3 a.m. Andrzej J. Kudlacik, 31, of Streamwood, Ill., was eastbound on the Toll Road, about 1.5 miles east of the Michigan City exit, when a deer entered his path of travel.

Kudlacik swerved, left the roadway to the left, and hit the concrete barrier wall, police said. His rig rolled onto the driverís side and promptly ignited, police said. Kudlacik himself was able to safely exit the tractor but debris strewn across all eastbound lanes caught fire, as did the grassy median, police said.

The Westville Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze.

Kudlacik--who was wearing a seatbelt--was not injured. He was issued a citation for unsafe lane movement, police said.

Eastbound motorists were diverted off at the 39 mile marker (Michigan City/U.S. Highway 421) for approximately two hours.
