A Chesterton resident was unsuccessfully targeted by a scammer who tried to convince him to turn on his computer, Chesterton Police said.

According to police, on Monday the resident reported that he’d received a phone call from someone with a California area code who advised him that “his company had received information that (the resident’s) computer had been hacked.”

The caller asked the resident if his computer was running. The resident said no. The caller asked him to turn it on. The resident said no. The caller then “swore at him and hung up the phone.”

The investigating officer tried twice to call the number provided by caller ID but both times received the message that “the call could not be completed as dialed.”

The resident “requested a report because he has been reading in the newspaper about a similar call that turns out to be a scam.”
