A road worker and a motorist died on Tuesday in a two-vehicle accident on
the Indiana Toll Road in LaPorte County, the Indiana State Police said.
The victims have been identified as Daniel J. Miller, 52, of LaPorte, a
17-year employee of the Toll Road; and Paul A. Kimbrugh, 78, with addresses
in Coldwater, Mich., and Cape Coral, Fla., police said.
According to police, at 11:30 a.m. Kimbrugh—who reportedly had been speeding
and driving erractically—was westbound at the 39.8 mile marker, just east of
the Michigan City exit, when his 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe rear-ended a pickup
truck parked on the inner shoulder.
Miller had just exited the pickup to fetch maintenance equipment from the
bed. Police said that the pickup had activated warning lights and an
illuminated arrow board on it. “There was also signage behind the pickup
warning westbound traffic of workers up ahead,” police said.
Kimbrugh was airlifted from the scene to Memorial Hospital in South Bend,
where he died of his injuries.
Also injured was the driver of the pickup truck, Kevin Standefer, 49, of
LaPorte, police said. He was transported to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in
Michigan City with non-life threatening injuries.
