A Hammond resident was sentenced last week in federal court to one year of probation, after pleading guilty to a charge of theft of government property, in connection with her failure to report additional income when applying for federal student aid, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana said.

Nicole Smith, 31, admitted that, during the 2008-09 academic year at Purdue University-Calumet, she submitted an application for federal student aid but failed to report additional income from Action For Children, which provides financial assistance for childcare for families living in the State of Illinois, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of the Inspector General.
