The Porter County Sheriff’s Police has released additional information about the head-on collision on Sunday on U.S. Highway 20.

According to police, at 6:39 p.m. Eliazar Aguirre, 42, of LaPorte, was westbound on U.S. 20, just east of Tremont Road, when he crossed the center line and collided with a second vehicle eastbound on U.S. 20.

The driver of the second vehicle was Clifford L. Caldwell Jr., 62, of Center Township.

Aguirre--who had to be extricated from his vehicle by Porter firefighters--sustained “severe internal injuries to the abdominal region” and was unable to provide a statement to investigators, police said. Caldwell sustained an injury to his chest from airbag deployment and complained of pain to his right ankle and foot, police said.

Witnesses advised police that they did not observe any obstructions in Aguirre’s path of travel nor any other vehicles in his vicinity prior to his crossing the center line.

Information on Aguirre’s current condition was not available.

Police estimated total damage to Aguirre’s 1995 Honda Accord and Caldwell’s 2001 Dodge Intrepid at up to $10,000.
