A trucker narrowly escaped injury early this morning after someone sniped at his rig on U.S. Highway 20, Portage Police said.

According to police, at 2:17 a.m. an officer was dispatched to the Best Western Hotel, where the trucker--driving for C & M Transport Inc. of Chicago Heights, Ill.--had gone to ground after taking gunfire on the passengerís side of the truck while westbound on U.S. 20 from Burns Harbor, near the west end of the woods approximately one-eighth mile west of Clem Road.

The officer subsequently found two bullet holes in the tractorís sleeper. The passengerís side window was also shattered. A ďmangled copper jacketed lead bulletĒ was later recovered from a plastic speaker in the cab and another bullet from the headliner to the left of the driverís seat, police said.

The trucker advised police that he hadnít heard the shots being fired. Neither, police said, did the guard in the guard shack at the Yogi Bear Campground at 5300 U.S. 20.
