A Portage
motorcyclist was killed Saturday after hitting a tree on Evelyn Street,
Portage Police said.
According to
police, at 3:43 a.m. Jeramy McWhirter, 43, was northbound on Evelyn Street
when he failed to negotiate the left turn onto westbound Lark Ave.,
continued straight up the driveway of the residence at the corner, and into
the yard, where McWhirter struck the tree, then the residence itself, with
enough force to cause damage to the house’s foundation and siding.
Two witnesses,
inside their homes at the time of the crash, told investigators that they
first “heard a motorcycle’s engine revving on Evelyn,” getting “louder and
louder” as it approached, and then “the squeal of brakes” just before the
sound of impact.
Police said that
McWhirter’s 2001 AMF FXS Series motorcycle left 68 feet of skid marks
leading to the curb in front of the residence.
