Three juveniles
were injured on Monday--one of them seriously enough to be airlifted--after
the car in which they were riding left the roadway and rolled, on a stretch
of Ind. 8 being chip-sealed by the Indiana Department of Transportation, the
Porter County Sheriff’s Police said.
According to
police, at 2:45 p.m. a 17-year-old Hebron boy was eastbound on Ind. 8 from
Hebron when he entered the INDOT work area at a speed reported to be above
the limit and subsequently lost control of his 2003 Toyota Celica. Police
said that the Toyota left the roadway to the right and rolled over.
The boy and his
front-seat passenger, a 14-year-old Hebron girl, were transported to
Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Crown Point with non-life threatening
injuries, police said.
His back-seat
passenger, however, a 17-year-old Hebron girl, was “airlifted for
incapacitating injuries,” police said.
“Alcohol and drugs
are not believed to be involved,” police said. “However, the investigation
is continuing.”
The PCSP reminded
motorists to use “extreme caution” when traveling Ind. 8 between Hebron and
Kouts.
INDOT announced on
Friday that crews would be chip- and fog-sealing that stretch of Ind. 8,
warned motorists that “loose stone will be present on the roadway during the
initial cure of the asphalt,” and advised them to “slow down and allow
additional space between vehicles.”
Late on Monday the
PCSP reported that even “normal speeds” were causing motorists, on entering
the gravel area, to lose control.
