A Pine Township resident was arrested Saturday on charges of criminal recklessness and unlawful possession of a firearm after the Porter County Sheriff’s Police said that he fired a handgun in the direction of several people.

According to police, at 3:07 a.m. officers were dispatched to the residence of Bryce C. Guenther, 26, at 3735 W. Dunes Highway, Apt. 1A, in response to a report that he had fired approximately seven rounds at four female subjects through an upstairs window.

On their arrival, police said, officers made contact with “several female subjects hiding in the ditches on both sides of U.S. Highway 12 just east of the residence.” At that time they were advised that Guenther was still inside the apartment with a 5-month-old infant, police said.

The PCSP’s emergency response team was mustered and dispatched to the scene and Guenther was subsequently taken into custody without incident, police said. The infant “seemed to be well taken care of and genuinely happy,” police said.

A Ruger 9mm semi-automatic pistol with nine rounds in 16-round magazine and one in the chamber was found under the bed, police said. A single 9mm casing was also located a the scene.

Police said that Guenther was previously convicted, in 2009, of dealing in a narcotic drug, “which makes his possession of a firearm illegal.”

Guenther was transported to Porter County Jail.
