A Lake Station man died Tuesday after losing control of his motorcycle on the I-80/94 on-ramp in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

The victim was identified as Edward S. Reifsteck III, 23.

According to police, at 9:52 p.m. Reifsteck, traveling at “an excessive speed,” failed to negotiate the curve on the ramp from northbound Kennedy Ave. in Hammond to eastbound I-80/94. Reifsteck lost control of his 2006 Suzuki and was thrown from it, coming to rest in the eastbound lanes of I-80/94, police said.

Both the east- and westbound lanes of I-80/94 were closed for the landing of an air ambulance, police said, but due to the Reifsteck’s injuries he was transported instead to Community Hospital in Munster by Hammond EMS. There he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival of blunt force trauma, police said.

Reifsteck was wearing a helmet.

The results of a routine toxicology screen are pending, police said.
